Pilocytic astrocytoma is the most common brain tumor in children. It’s a typically benign, slow-growing astrocytoma (WHO grade I) that most often arises in the cerebellum in kids. Its often localized nature makes surgical removal successful in many cases, which is why it appears most frequently in pediatric brain tumor series.

Medulloblastoma, while the most common malignant pediatric brain tumor, occurs less often overall than pilocytic astrocytoma. Ependymomas and glioblastomas are less common in the pediatric population, with glioblastoma being particularly rare in children and more typical of adults.
